The New Blog

The first post on my blog was written on the 22nd August 2012.  We had Jeff Utecht, an educational authority on blogging, visit the school as we could see the potential for recording progress in EYFS and improving communication with parents.  Blogs have become part and parcel of our school, and we are continuing to look how  we can improve them.  The individual blogs, and the class blog are going to continue, but my blog is being incorporated into the whole school - BIS Hub.
The school website has been updated, and a link to the BIS Hub has appeared along the top line of links:

This is the new BIS HUB:

From the BIS Hub there is a specific link to the Tu Xuong Blog

Here you can find a weekly update from Ms Sue, Links to information from parents, and news about events that have taken place or are scheduled to take place at the TX Campus.

Finer Diners - Milepost 1

There was an added dimension to Finer Diners today.  As always we were celebrating children who have made good choices in the canteen; being polite to the canteen staff, choosing healthy options (salad and vegetables), and generally behaving in a way that is an example to others.  What made today special, was that we were also celebrating being the FOBISIA Mathletics Champions.  Last Friday all the children from Year 1 up took part in the competition which involved going online and answering a variety of maths questions.  We were competing against other schools from around the region and it just goes to show the standard of our pupils that they came out overall winners in the Milepost (or Keystage) 1 category.  Well done to everyone in Year 1 and Year 2, but particularly to Kevin, Advait and Yun Seo (Year 1), and Nick, Lulu and Thy (Year 2).

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The Milepost 3 production of Charlie & the Chocolate Factory will be performed on Tuesday 14th April. Five children are lucky enough to find one of Willy Wonka’s golden tickets inside a chocolate bar, and are treated to a trip around his magical factory. But the naughty children may find that the surprises in store for them are not so sweet after all…

Finer Diners - MP3

Congratulations to Rosie, Gia Bao and Amiri (Year 5), and Minh Vy, Bach and Bao Pierre (Year 6) who were this week's Milepost 3 Finer Diners!

With all the investigations and experiments taking place this week, the children talked excitedly about what they had been learning in science day.  One of the children's favourite materials is the mixture that is produced when water is added to corn starch - at TX it is generally known as 'gloop'. It sometimes behaves like a liquid and sometimes like a solid.  Bach told us of a video.  I'm not sure if it was this one, but this one is very good:

Year 3 Sleepover

After 4.30pm, schools are usually quiet places.  You might find cleaners, removing glitter from EYFS carpets, or teachers marking children's books.  A guard might be checking doors are locked or maybe a member of the office team finishing an admin task before heading home.  By 6.00pm, the school is usually very quiet...not on Thursday!
Last night, children in Year 3 came back for the sleepover and they were very excited and full of energy.  Games were played in the Soft Play Room and in the swimming pool, before pizza and a cake to celebrate Albane's birthday.  Then it was up to the hall to prepare the beds and watch a film.
Ms Sue had a really tricky job in judging the best dressed teddy award (well done to Dang Nguyen, Mei and Dishan), but in all it was all the support from teachers and teaching assistants that made it such an enjoyable evening for the Year 3s.

Science Day

School was a hive of activity on Thursday.  Wherever you went in the school, there junior Einsteins busy at work carrying out a whole host of fantastic investigations and amazing experiments.  The Year 1 children were trying to find the best material to make umbrellas out of.  Paper towels and nets were not very successful when tested on mums and teachers who volunteered in the afternoon, however the foil and cling film proved a quite waterproof.  The children in Year 6 were going a step further (literally) as they had to design a shoe that was not only waterproof, but also with a lot of friction.  There were some interesting designs.  Year 5 experimented with air resistance, Year 4 looked into static electricity and Year 3 explored light and optical illusions - they made some amazing pin-hole cameras.  You will need to ask a Year 3 about what happens when you look in a pinhole camera!  The Year 2s also did some work on light and also how to keep healthy.  EYFS were not to be outdone and had a range of experiments that engaged the senses including blind taste tests and erupting baking soda.
