When I looked across the playground this afternoon, I saw the familiar sight of the Year 2 children happily playing games and having adventures on the Jungle Gym, and the most unfamiliar sight of Year 1 children sitting in rows by the gate. 'What's happening there?' I wandered. When I went over, Ms Beth and her class explained that they were observing; looking at what was happening outside the school gate. They went on to tell me that they were drawing pictures of things that moved as part of their new science topic; forces.
Science is a subject that begins with our very youngest children. The ability to ask good questions and then to know how to go about finding the answers is at the heart of our science programme. This goes hand in hand with the knowledge and understanding. Today the children were learning how to observe and record exactly what they see. I look forward to seeing how their topic develops back in the classroom.
