Being an international school means we have children from many nations speaking different home languages. At BIS, the language the children learn in is English, however, some children begin our school with little or no English, others only have basic social English (which takes approximately two years to learn). To become fluent enough to be able to study in that language takes up to seven years. I am always amazed at those children who happily function in two or even three languages.
This week we are introducing 'Language in Focus' to the children. The language chosen will be unfamiliar to the children and yet, they will be expected to use the language to answer the register or count. This will hopefully raise awareness of the difficulty of communicating in an unfamiliar language as well as helping us in our aim to produce 'Global Citizens'.
